SUMMARY:Heritage Week Tours
DESCRIPTION:The Old Savoy and The Deco Theatre are now one of Northampton’s premier venues available for hire for theatrical productions\, conferences\, meetings\, wedding receptions\, parties and other social or corporate events\, and although it certainly didn’t start that way when it was first built\, it has always been a home of family entertainment. \nThe building first opened on Saturday 2 May 1936 in a blaze of publicity as “the Savoy”\, described as “Northampton’s only super Cinema” and reported to be “the last word in comfort”. It was part of the ABC group\, designed by their prolific house architect WR Glen and built in under nine months on the site of the original Technical College. It was constructed in the International Modernistic style and is arguably the best remaining example of Glen’s work\, with all the main features still in place and sympathetically renovated. \nThe Savoy was very popular and originally held almost 2000 people in the 696 seat circle and 1200 seat stalls. It was designed both as a cinema and theatre complete with orchestra pit. It hosted shows and concerts as well as films. \nIn the 1950s it was renamed the ‘ABC’ in line with the group’s national branding policy and was the local venue of choice for the touring bands of the ’60s\, including the Beatles in both March and November 1963\, the Rolling Stones in 1965 and infamously PJ Proby in 1965\, when he was arrested for splitting his trousers on stage! \nA number of the ’60s bands have returned to play The Deco Theatre in recent years\, including the Hollies\, the Searchers and Billy J Kramer. \nIn 1974\, it was converted to a three-screen complex by using the rear of the stalls with a dividing wall for the 2 smaller screens and leaving the main auditorium circle as the main ‘ABC 1’. \nBy the mid-’90s\, however\, the ABC now renamed Cannon cinema was unable to compete with the modern multi-screen complexes and it finally closed its doors in 1995 with the appropriately named “Terminal Velocity”. \nThe building was derelict for five years until 2000 when it was converted to a multi-purpose venue opening in October 2004. \nGuided  Tours are taking place on the hour on 7th and 11th September 2024 – Pre booking is required

DESCRIPTION:“In our 70th anniversary year the Northampton Gilbert & Sullivan Group are thrilled to be returning to the stage with a brand-new production of The Mikado. \nThis perennial family favourite was the group’s first production\, and it seems only fitting for us to be starting our next 70 years with the same show. \nThe Mikado is\, without doubt\, the most popular of Gilbert & Sullivan’s operettas\, and it is no wonder as the story skilfully combines colourful characters\, memorable music\, with an underlying tale of power\, corruption\, love\, betrothal and sycophancy…… \n\nThis year the action takes place at the grand opening of a Mikado Tearoom\, which were all the rage in England in the early 1900’s\, where the staff are planning to bring to life the town of Titipu\, and everyone’s favourite characters Poo-Bah\, Ko-Ko\, Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum to entertain their invited guests\, as they await the arrival of the dessert trolley and of course The Mikado in this\, a truly colourful spectacle of Japanese delight. \nUnder the artful direction of Leon Berger\, Director\, and David Chambers\, Musical Director\, our Mikado Tearoom and Japanese adventure commences at the Old Savoy\, home of the Deco Theatre\, from 1st May to 4th May 2024″ \nThis production is set in an English Mikado Tearoom\, it will not be performed traditionally i.e. with the cast dressed in traditional Japanese outfits and make-up. \nPLEASE CALL THE BOX OFFICE ON 01604 491005 FOR 10% DISCOUNT ON GROUPS OF 10 OR MORE

These legends of the 60’s will deliver to you a night never to be forgotten. \n\nSTARRING\nDOZY BEAKY MICK & TICH. Originally called Dave Dee And The Bostons formed in 1961. Changing their name to Dave Dee\, Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich in 1964. In 1966 the band were in the charts for 50 weeks out of 52. In Germany alone in 1967\, record sales outsold The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Hits include Bend It\, Zabadak and The Legend Of Xanadu plus many more. This fast moving energetic set from DBMT will have you dancing and singing in the isles performing hit after hit after hit. \nTHE TREMS (former members of The Tremeloes). The Tremeloes had their first hit with Someone Someone in 1964 and the world became their stage performing on it from 1964 through 2024. They have earned a fantastic reputation as not only one of the most entertaining bands on tour today but\, also for their distinctive harmonies. Other hits include Call Me Number One\, Even The Bad Times Are Good\, and of course their worldwide number one hit\, Silence Is Golden. \nTHE FORTUNES. Hailing from Birmingham England\, the band first came into prominence in 1964 with their hit single Caroline\, which was used as the signature tune for the influential Pirate Radio Station of the same name. Other classics include\, Storm In A Teacup\, You’ve Got Your Troubles\, Freedom Come Freedom Go. The Fortunes still continue to tour the world with shows in Australia\, New Zealand and The USA incorporating a week long residency in the Fabulous Las Vegas. \nTHE SWINGING BLUE JEANS. The SBJ’s have a history that spans back to the early 1960’s. Over the years their hit singles ‘Hippy Hippy Shake’\, ‘You’re No Good\, ‘Good Golly Miss Molly and ‘Don’t Make Me Over’ have been the bedrock of the bands memorable live performances.  The Swinging Blue Jeans have been led by Alan Lovell\, faithfully carrying on the long tradition of the band.  Peter Oakman continues with the band to this day along with Jeff Bannister and Graham Hollingworth who complete the line-up. \nVANITY FARE. Formed in 1966 (often misspelled Vanity Fair\, due to the similarity of the novel and magazine title) are a British pop/rock group famously known for such hits as\, I Live For The Sun\, Early In The Morning and the worldwide classic\, “Hitchin A Ride” which scored the band a number one on the Billboard 100 in the USA.  The harmonies of Vanity Fare a renowned throughout the sixties scene which makes them one of the best vocal groups still touring today. \nStep back in time to when pop music was at its very best.
